How to protect a RV awning in heavy rain or strong wind?
You want to use your awning not only when the sun is shining, but also when the weather is unstable. Showers of rain and gusts of wind are no reason to cancel a barbeque party or cosy get-together, but what happens in heavy rain or stormy weather?
In order to enjoy the comfort of your awning in complete peace of mind, you should know how the weather protection on your awning model works. Which safety features are already included, and what precautions should you take yourself to prevent damage to your awning?
Golden rule: never leave the awning unattended for a long time! You should by no means leave your awning unattended for a long time. After all, it’s hard to predict what the weather’s going to do in your absence. So, before you are heading for the town or beach, remember to roll up the awning before you leave! The only exception to the rule is when you have set up an awning tent (MyRoom or CampRoom) and thus created a sturdy, weather-proof construction
Special Case PW 3800
Our wall awning PerfectWall PW 3800 deserves a chapter of its own. This special model can be extended without using the integrated support legs for a short stop in calm weather. You can also add a wind sensor (optional accessory) to let your awning retract automatically as when the wind begins to blow.
In case of a longer stay it is worthwhile to set up the support legs. Alternatively, you can anchor the awning firmly to the ground with the WeatherKit supplied with each unit. It gives the awning so much stability that you can switch off the wind sensor without worries. In this way you disable the automatic retraction function, so you can enjoy the shade of your awning at all times, even in changing wind conditions.
Protect larger Awnings with the tension rafter
If you have a larger awning (4 metres or longer), you should secure the centre section with the tension rafter supplied with each unit. This prevents the awning from turning inwards in strong wind. It also avoids sagging of the awning fabric when water has built up on top in heavy rain. Installation is quick and easy. Simply push the tie rod together, put one end into the cradle on the housing and let the other end click in place in the lead rail.
