Meet the Dirtgirls

Åre Dirtgirls

In the heart of Sweden’s mountainous Åre region, a new force in mountain biking has emerged, redefining the landscape—both literally and figuratively. The Dirtgirls, a dedicated group of women mountain bikers, have taken the trailblazing spirit to a new level.

In a world where convenience often takes priority, a group of passionate mountain bikers in Åre, Sweden, are choosing a different path. These women, united by a shared love for mountain biking, have formed a group called the Dirtgirls. Their mission? To carve out their own trails, ride them hard, and build a community around the sport they love.

Dirtgirls

Trail builders and trail blazers

It all started in the spring of 2024. The Dirtgirls, led by Freida, decided it was time to strike out on their own. While they had always been part of the larger biking community, often working alongside the guys to build trails, they wanted to see what they could accomplish on their own. This wasn’t about proving something to others – it was about proving something to themselves.

The first steps were daunting. Many of the Dirtgirls had never built a trail from scratch before. They had no tools, no experience, just a deep-seated passion for mountain biking and a determination to create something of their own. Despite the challenges, they began meeting every Tuesday evening, armed with shovels and spades, ready to dig, rake, and ride.

"I’d been building trails for a while, but it was almost always just guys out there. So, I started a community, the Dirtgirls, to bring women together and build confidence. Now, we’re a strong community of women trail-builders, and I couldn’t be prouder."

As the summer went on, their trail began to take shape – a 200-meter testament to their hard work and perseverance. Along the way, the group grew, drawing in more women who were eager to be a part of something special. The weekly gatherings became more than just a time to dig – they became a space for laughter, camaraderie, and the sheer joy of riding through trails they had built with their own hands.

Dometic couldn’t help but be inspired by their story. We wanted to support their efforts, so we provided them with new gear and tools to keep them going. We had to see for ourselves what they were creating, so we joined them during the Åre Bike Festival. Watching them ride the trails they had built was nothing short of amazing, and seeing one of their own, Madeleine, take third place in the girls’ downhill race was the cherry on top.

"We truly appreciate Dometic believing in our Dirtgirls community. The Dometic gear has been super useful for our time outdoors together on Digging Tuesdays, and the new tools have helped us improve the trail building too! Girls support girls, and Dometic supports us too."

The Dirtgirls aren’t done yet. As winter approaches, they’re already making plans for next year, excited to return to their trails as soon as the snow melts. They’re not just building trails – they’re building a legacy. And we’re thrilled to be part of their journey.
