- The Dometic DG3 Gyro: Redefining What Is Possible Within the Marine Stabilisation Market
Redefining What Is Possible Within the Marine Stabilisation Market
The Dometic DG3 Gyro Stabiliser has over 50 years of product engineering behind it. Designed and manufactured in Vancouver, this product is arriving at a time when the marine industry is eager for innovation in stabilization technology. The DG3 offers a game-changing 3 x faster spin-up time compared to its closest competitor and achieving a 40% reduction in power consumption.
To understand the technology and engineering breakthroughs behind the DG3, we sat down with the Dometic product team to discuss their latest innovation.
Q: The DG3 is being called the first truly active gyro in the recreational market. Can you explain what this means and why it’s important?
A: Using our inverted roller screw technology that many have seen before in the iconic Dometic Optimus steering systems, Dometic have unlocked the ability to actively control the stabilisation forces from the gyro. The use of an electric precession actuator allows more precise movements of the stabilizer. With this technology the DG3 is effective in a wider range of conditions and applications ranging from mild to extreme.
Q: A 40% reduction in power consumption is a significant saving. For the boat owner, what benefit is this?
A: Due to the DG3’s lower power consumption, a generator may not be needed for operation and battery requirements are reducedDG3 recaptures energy during stabilization in moderate to heavy sea states, reducing the power draw from the house batteries. Reduced power consumption means more time on the water for you with your friends and family.
Q: The DG3 utilizes roller screw technology originally designed for the iconic Optimus system. How does this implementation enhance the DG3’s functionality?
A: The Roller screw technology enables complete control of the stabiliser. With this technology Dometic have unlocked ’active stabilisation’ through the ability to drive the actuator to position the hemisphere in a more precise and efficient manner.
Q: The complete elimination of hydraulics is a key difference between the DG3 and competitor products. What impact does this have on abilities of the product?
A: Not only does the electric precession actuator enhance the Stabilizing ability. The removal of Hydraulics also reduces service costs and eliminates leaks. The electric actuator also allows a more precise and instant response to sea state.
Q: While boat users with a competitor gyro installed will be waiting up to 50 minutes for spin up, the DG3 has recently proven a 3x faster spin up time, ready for use in under 10 minutes and max RPM achieved in just 16 minutes. What part of the engineering made this spin up time possible?
A: The DG3 incorporates a dedicated 48V spin battery, allowing for reliable and consistent spin up times. In addition, the flywheel has been engineered with specific mass placement, allowing to DG3 to achieve stabilisation at a lower RPM to competitors. Operating at a lower RPM also increases bearing life and reduces servicing requirements of the unit. The faster spin up & spin down times are supported by a unique patent pending cooling loop.
The Dometic DG3 Gyro Stabilizer redefines what’s possible in recreational marine stabilization, combining decades of engineering expertise with state-of-the-art technology. Whether it’s faster spin-up, lower power consumption, or cutting-edge active control, the DG3 sets a new standard for performance, efficiency, and reliability.
